Composé un peu à la hâte (un mois à peine), Le Messie est créé à Dublin en 1742. Le public de la première est si nombreux que l’on prie les dames de venir sans robes à paniers, les messieurs sans épée… Les bénéfices furent versés à des œuvres de charité. Mais l’année suivante, à Londres, l’accueil est hostile: le public n’accepte pas d’entendre les textes sacrés au théâtre. Ce n’est qu’à partir de 1750, lorsque l’oratorio est joué au bénéfice du Foundling Hospital, dans la chapelle de cette institution de bienfaisance, qu’il est enfin apprécié dans la capitale. Il sera alors repris chaque année dans ce lieu et joué trente-six fois du vivant de Haendel. À chef-d’œuvre d’exception, interprètes d’exception: l’Irish Baroque Orchestra et le Chœur Resurgam. Et l’immense Monica Huggett à la discographie impressionnante. Gage d’un concert mémorable.
